FAVERSHAM BC

A day of fun and history was held at Faversham Bowls Club on Sunday as The Market Inn were crowned champions of the Industrial Day by Mayor of Faversham, Trevor Martin. The Industrial Day competition is a historic bowls competition in its 69th year where 14 local businesses from Faversham put themselves to the test in a bowls match against other local businesses competing for the Coronation Cup.

The champions for 2022 were the Market Inn - made up of Martin Gore, Derek Thomson, Dave Greetham and Ben Davis - who won 14-4 in the final against MME Engineering (M Boswell, S Adams, Chris Miles, J Wise).

Last year’s winners, Parry Page Joinery (Craig Preston, Ed Muddiman, Jordan Handing and Lewis Gore) again had a good competition by finishing third after a 13-4 win over fourth-placed RJ Childs (Alan Childs, George Childs, Billy Bean and Rob Childs).

Cllr Martin bowled the first bowl of the day to start the competition and also presented the cup and medals to the winners. Faversham Bowling Club president Alan Bing assisted in the presentation. The local businesses taking part were GIST, GXO, Lowther Lofts, R J Childs, MME Engineering, The Three Tuns, Shepherd Neame, Royal Mail, S and A Steel Services Ltd, Parry Page Joinery, Market Inn and Creekside Boxing Club. The Coronation Cup is so named as it was donated in the coronation year of 1952, with the first competition being held the following year in 1953. Shepherd Neame were the first winners of that competition nearly 70 years ago. Faversham progressed in the second round of the Bernard Annand competition last Saturday with a win over Broadstairs.

Paul Ellison, James Cutting, Bill Willis and Harry Wimbleroberts won 27-13, while Ray Mcdonald, Kevin Cook, Chris Abbitt and John Winslow lost a close game 17-19. The combined scores were enough to see Faversham go through. The club had an excellent 12473 East Kent Mixed Triples League win over six rinks at home to Birchington. The best Faversham rink was 29-9 by Dave Mitchell, Bill Willis and Trish Anderson. Faversham also beat Barham in the same competition, winning 82-43 over four rinks. The best Faversham rink was 29-9 by Simon Gibbons, Barbara Franklin and Kevin Cook.
