Chris and Co’s crazy golf!

Chris Sherwood highlighted “four crazy moments” including his 15th-hole eagle as he, Brandon Ware, Joe Lamb and Warren Johnson scored 79 points to win Canterbury’s April Bank Holiday Team Stableford by countback on Monday. They just held off Alan Moore, Tony Mcintyre, Stephen Jones and Stephen Richards in a field of 18 teams. Sherwood said: “It was crazy. “We started on the ninth and, on the 10th, Brandon was just over the ditch in two and then holed from 120 yards with a pitching wedge for birdie. “It was wet and windy and, on the 15th, I had about 180 in and thought ‘I’m going to hit a bit extra’ so I hit a knockdown 5 wood.

“It looked like it was right on the edge of the hole and must have been resting against the pin because, as we were walking up, it just disappeared!

“I had a hole-in-one in February and, in some ways, this was even better because it was so far away. “Brandon also hit the pin on the 14th with his third shot to make par and, finally, Joe holed about a 25-foot putt for a birdie on the seventh.”

Jones birdied the first, fourth and eighth, along with eight pars and one bogey, and Richards also scored heavily as they, Moore and Mcintyre took second by two points. Sandro Carlotti anchored the team with 13 pars and one bogey as he, Marcus Rabenda, Seamus Gallagher and Andrew Davies scored 77 points to take third on countback from Jack Brockman, who birdied the seventh, with Paul Stewart, Sam Ripley and Matt Stewart.

Simon Mount equalled his best gross score with 83, net 69, to win last Wednesday’s men’s Midweek Medal.

Mount scored four pars and five bogeys for a five-over-par 41 on his front nine and a birdie at the 18th, two pars, four bogeys and doubles at the 11th and 15th for 42 coming in.

He won by one shot from Emmanuel Madekufamba, gross 78, who birdied the par 5 first, seventh and 18th holes and scored six pars and eight bogeys, but paid dearly for a double at the 12th. They were the only players under-par net in a field of 46.

Gavin Wilson scored gross 77, with birdies at the first, seventh and 15th in his first competition round at Canterbury, for third on countback from fellow new members Kyle Bennett, gross 76, and Eric Norton, gross 83, along with fifth-placed Shane Tyrrell, gross 96.

Mount said: “It was a bit of a miracle, really.

“Every now and again, you are hoping for the round where you play one or two decent shots and they come off - and today was one of those days.” Canterbury lost 4-0 on a saturated London Beach course in their first East Kent Evening League, Division 1, fixture of the season on Friday Results: Jamie White & Peter Brisley lost 2&1, Sandro Carlotti & Connor Bundock lost 2&1, Ray Holmes & Rupert Chitty lost 3&2, Sunil Samarasinghe & Matt Admans lost 4&3. Mandy Sargent joked she fainted after winning the first competition she had ever entered in the Ladies’ April Blue/red Tees Stableford. Tennis professional Sargent joined Canterbury last year after a 30-year absence from golf and scored 22 points on her outward nine and 16 coming in to win by three from Pat Askham in a field of 19.

Askham scored 18 points on her back nine to hold off Val Lucas, who birdied the 15th, Val Binns and fifth-placed Di Hollidge on countback. Sargent said: “I fainted with surprise when I found out I had won. I had to get off the floor! “But it was beginner’s luck, I felt embarrassed having 50 shots.”

Lexi Donohue scored 87, net 68, to win Sunday’s Juniors’ OKS Cup by two shots from Scarlett Newing.

Donohue, who has finished second four times and third once since last winning in January said: “I feel awesome. “That’s my best gross score at Canterbury. I’ve been trying really hard, so to shoot 87 to beat my best by one is awesome, too.” Donohue scored 14 bogeys, three pars and a double at the fifth while Newing, scored 101, net 70, for second in her first Canterbury competition. Harry Andrews scored gross 101, net 71, for third place in a field of 11. Canterbury’s Louis Garvey won only the third competition he had ever played in Tuesday’s Kent Golf Invicta 12s par 3 scratch event at Pedham Place, near Swanley.

Dover Grammar School pupil Garvey, 11, scored an eighth-hole birdie and six pars in a score of 17-over-par.

He said: “I’m really excited, it’s my first win in only my third competition and I scored 17-over through 18 holes for 71. “They didn’t do it on handicap. Weirdly enough, there weren’t any shots so everyone was playing off scratch and I got one birdie on the eighth with a pitching wedge from 115 yards and six pars.”
