Superb Sayle calls the shots

-

Jan Sayle trotted off with the top prize after winning the women’s Turkey Trot with 28 points over 13 holes on Tuesday.

Playing steadily throughout, she scored on all holes as she came in with 20 points on the front nine and eight on the remaining four.

Sayle said: “I birdied the second and parred the third, which was a boost to my frontnine score. I then got two points on the final four holes. “There was some friendly rivalry between me and my playing partner Sue Henderson. We boosted each other’s game.”

A three-way tie for second place between Henderson, Linda Macklin and Lucy Murphy on 25 points could have gone either way. The close-run competition between the trio was a different story after nine holes. Henderson had carded 19 points, Macklin 16 and Murphy 15.

With all three then practically matching stroke for stroke on the remaining four holes, Murphy’s par on the 13th assured her win with 10 points from Macklin’s nine. Faversham women’s Pearson Trophy team celebrated a 5&2 win at Kings Hill.

They played their best games ever to decisively win their matches, despite some going to the 19th hole.

“This was a great win for an away match,” said team captain Chris Murray. “Several of our players had to give lots of shots. But they played so well.” Mick Hutton and Kevin Funnell won the inaugural Don Abel Trophy - an 18-hole greensomes competition - last Thursday.

Coming in with 41 points, despite missing out on a few birdies along the way, they stole the honour from their nearest rivals.

Hutton said: “We started reasonably well, taking Kev’s drives on the first three holes. And because we quite often play together, we know what to expect from each other. “I didn’t drive very well on the eighth but we took it as Kev’s second shot is generally long

and we could play that advantage. It’s a shame we just missed out on a birdie there. “The same happened on the 16th. My drive was nearer the hole than Kev’s, but the putt

just didn’t go in. But it was nice to get a par.”

With 24 points out and 17 back, they finished two points ahead of Ray Beedle and John Price on 39 points.
