-

Division 3 CW15 earned a victory over CW9 of Division 1 in the Quarter-final in the Canterbury & District Table Tennis Association’s Dare Cup. The handicap was set at 144 points for CW15, which meant CW9 had to restrict CW15 to 18 points-per-game.

Jake Martin could only accumulate 10 and then 13 against John Wickings but, against Barrie Thomas, Martin scored an excellent 20 and 24. Martin finished off with 16 and 23 and at that stage - after the seventh tie - CW15 were 93 points to the good.

Jim Fontanelli took 19 and 24 in his first tie against Fairweather.

Fontanelli was well restricted in his points by Wickings, however, as he registered just 12 and 16 in his two matches.

He rounded off his final tie with an efficient 21 and 22 game scores against Thomas, leaving CW15 86 ahead at the end of the eighth tie.

Raif Fontanelli began with an outstanding score against Thomas, where he took 25 and 24 - while Thomas could only muster 12 and 25. He continued his extraordinary form against Fairweather to claim both games for his 50 points and Fairweather could only get 16 and 24. Against Wickings, Fontanelli got just 14 in the first match but in game two beat Wickings 25-12. That gave CW15 a 500-426 success. A Quarter-final encounter in the Lew Vale Cup saw Herne Bay G see off Choughs B. Danny Reardon had to give Darren Mcculloch-smith a point and came through comfortably in his two games. Lee Charman started at -6, +15 against David Adelman and just scraped a deuce win in the first fixture in a 2-0 success.

Malcolm Hooper had a -3, +15 start against Malcolm Trotter. Hooper was beaten comprehensively in game one, only to take the second contest. Charman had to give Mcculloch-smith a four-point lead and had two close matches which put his side 7-1 up. Reardon started at -2, +15 with Trotter, Reardon taking the opening game. But Trotter grabbed the second. Hooper began at -3, +15 against Adelman and needed a deuce to win the first game and edged through match two, taking Bay to a 10-2 lead.

Charman faced a -5, +15 start against Trotter and he fell to defeat in both games. Hooper had to give Smith a two-point start and scraped a win on deuce and a triumph in game two gave Herne Bay G a 12-4 victory.
