Kerrang! (UK) - - Smashing Pumpkins -

GISH (1991) It was evident right from the off that Smashing Pumpkins were more than a little different from their alternative rock peers. Over in Seattle, the then-fermenting grunge scene had located its identity in the sludgy intersection between metal and punk. Gish certainly has no shortage of riffola or attitude, but it pursued a more psychedelic agenda, pulling shoegaze-y sonics and rainbow colours into its orbit. The audacious one-two impact of I Am One and Siva remains the most joyous gut-punch of an opening salvo in the Pumpkins’ catalogue.
