THE DARKNESS LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH (COOKING VINYL) KKKKK

Kerrang! (UK) - - Reviews -

FOR FANS OF: AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Queen ■ “Gimme a D!” yells Justin Hawkins at the crowd, early on in this live document. “Gimme an Arkness!” Ah, The Darkness live: there is no greater example of masterfully entertaining horsing around in the name of rock’n’roll. Thankfully, Justin’s nudge-wink sense of fun and toothy charm still works when you can’t see him prowling round the stage in his Lycra like a cross between Freddie Mercury and a particularly enthusiastic gym instructor. “Thank you so much to this evening’s professional photographers for taking those lovely photos,” he says at one point, before giggling, “Did you get anything good? You’ve had your chance.” Musically, this finds the band on fine form, although the summer release date does make the segment where Justin turns on some Christmas lights before Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) feel hopelessly out of time. But then, such ridiculousness is all part of their appeal, innit. NICK RUSKELL
