FOR FANS OF: Iron Maiden, Helloween, Nightwish

■ Having released their power metal debut only last December, the quick release of this four-track EP almost feels like a dismissal of that worthy work. That said, with pivotal appearances at Bloodstock and Wacken in the pipeline, it’s a good time for these five Japanese women to remind us of their extraordinary talents. Battle Against Damnation confirms that extraordinary isn’t too strong a word. Opener The Crusade will remind any British metal fan of Maiden classic Aces High, a comparison that is not easily earned, while Break The Wall is even better – thrash riffs and catchy hooks at thrilling speed. The remaining songs have stronger symphonic allusions, less immediate but evolving to a climactic finish. Lovebites will neither stand or fall on the strength of a four-track EP, but these songs are compelling enough to suggest that the quintet have stepped up a level, even in the short time since their debut album. Keep an eye on this lot. STEVE BEEBEE
