THE AMERICAN POLITICAL SYSTEM IS BROKEN

Kerrang! (UK) - - Talking Loud -

Following last month’s mid-term elections in which the Democrats took back control of Congress, LAURA JANE GRACE explains why the U.S. political system needs a total overhaul…

Ireally want to be optimistic, but I’m not. I’m fucking so pessimistic about everything right now. And I think that [Donald] Trump is the symptom of the system, not the root of it. That being said, in the U.S. in particular, as white people become more of a minority, that’s obviously what the reaction to minorities and immigrants coming here is. Like, ‘We don’t want anyone who’s not white here because there are becoming fewer and fewer white people’ – and in a world with an exploding population and dwindling resources, the fight for those resources and the fight for those closed borders will become only more vicious. “I think that in a lot of ways, the world is at war and people need to think differently. People need to stop comparing everything to [Adolf] Hitler and people need to stop thinking in terms of World War I and World War II. The world is at war and I don’t know how to get back from that. I put faith in the mid-terms – I really hoped people would : o turn out and vote – but at the same time t o the fucking system’s rigged. “In the state of Georgia, where I was born, they were gerrymandering there and trying to disenfranchise the African-american community from being able to vote – just trying to block people from voting that might not vote the way that the other party wanted M them to vote. And that’s not a new thing, either. Look at George W. Bush’s : election [in 2000], which was such a highlycontested election – I was writing about that when we did [Against Me!’s 2005 record] Searching For A Former Clarity, talking about ballots drifting into the ocean in relation to all the ballots in Florida that were never counted. And Florida was the state that made the difference between [Democratic nominee Al] Gore and Bush then, and we saw there that there’s still rampant election corruption and rampant government corruption now.

“Unfortunately, the conversation has been narrowed down to being like, ‘I just wish the Democrats would win every time.’ But the problem isn’t just going to be fixed if the Democrats win – the problem is that it’s a fucking broken system. What I actually wish is that there were more than two choices.” LAURA JANE GRACE & THE DEVOURING MOTHERS ’ NEW ALBUM BOUGHT TO ROT IS OUT NOW VIA bloodshot records
