“I LOVED SHIRLEY BASSEY FOR A YEAR…”

Sweaty palms and ripped trousers? Just another day in the life of THE STRUTS’ LUKE SPILLER…

I HAD A JOB AS A CLEANER IN A REST HOME

“It was for people with dementia in Clevedon. I basically cleaned the rooms and lots of messy toilets. It was the worst and greatest job at the same time, because I was able to listen to hours of music on my ipod while I worked. I’d be listening to everything from Electric Light Orchestra to Wu-tang Clan to AC/DC. It was a real important year of soaking up all this inspiration.”

I PAINT GUITARS IN MY SPARE TIME

“It’s something I’ve found to be very therapeutic when I’m on the road. I just started doing it for fun, and since then I’ve had a couple of fans commission me to paint a guitar for them. I’m hoping to maybe do an exhibition or something big like that in the next few years.” “Right up the rear end! It was literally by the second song of a 45-minute set, and I didn’t even realise until I felt this breeze at the back of my legs. I basically got through the rest of the gig by never turning my back to the crowd and reaching behind me when I needed a bottle of water, which probably looked quite strange for 30-odd minutes.”

I ONCE SPLIT MY LEATHER TROUSERS ONSTAGE I SUFFER FROM HYPERHIDROSIS

“It’s basically excessive sweating of the hands and feet, and growing up it made holding girls’ hands very embarrassing. It comes in waves during my day-today stuff and brings up these constant butterflies in the stomach. In a weird way, though, it’s also fuel for when I jump up onstage. When I’m up there it feels like I’m working off this nervous tension that accumulates inside me every day.”

I’M WORKING ON A ROCK OPERA

“If it sounds like anything, it’s Downton Abbey meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show! It’s got magic, male prostitution, rock’n’roll and 18th-century England. Like all passion projects, I have no idea if it will go anywhere. The most fun thing is tracking vocals for all the different characters. In its demo form it sounds like Eddie Murphy playing everyone in The Nutty Professor.”

MY BIGGEST REGRET IS NOT GETTING MY SHIT TOGETHER EARLIER

“When I look back at times I wasn’t as busy as I am now I do feel like I could have achieved a lot more if I had gone out less, drank less and did less drugs. I could have got stuck in so much earlier as a songwriter and musician. I mean, it all happens for a reason and now I’m practically sober when we’re on the road, and I think the reason I’m able to put those things to one side is because I’m not missing out on anything.” THE STRUTS’ NEW ALBUM YOUNG AND DANGEROUS IS OUT NOW VIA INTERSCOPE RECORDS.
