Go for ge­o­met­ri­cal wow fac­tor when you make this stun­ning Rico cardi­gan us­ing the in­tar­sia colour method.

PAT­TERN NOTE When chang­ing colours twist the new colour yarn with the old colour yarn to pre­vent a hole form­ing. When mak­ing black and white her­ring­bone sec­tions strand yarn not in use across the back of your work. For larger mo­tifs use sep­a­rate lengths of yarn.

BACK Us­ing 9mm cir­cu­lar nee­dle, yarn B and thumb method cast on 74 sts. Row 1 (RS): K2, *p1, k1, rep from * to end. This row is called k1, p1 rib (with edge sts). Work in rib for a fur­ther nine rows, end­ing with a WS row. Next row: Work first row of patt chart 1, read­ing chart from right to left on odd num­bered rows, and from left to right on even num­bered rows. Cont in patt from chart 1, us­ing in­tar­sia tech­nique, un­til all chart rows are fin­ished. Cast off.

LEFT FRONT Us­ing 9mm cir­cu­lar nee­dle, yarn B and thumb method cast on 37 sts. Row 1 (RS): K1, *p1, k1, rep from * to end. Row 2 (WS): K2, p1, k1, rep from * to last 3 sts, p1, k2. Th­ese 2 rows form k1, p1 rib (with edge sts). Work eight more rows in rib. ** Next row: Work first row of patt chart 2, read­ing chart from right to left on odd num­bered rows, and from left to right on even num­bered rows. Cont in patt from chart 2, us­ing in­tar­sia tech­nique, cast­ing off 8 sts at front of neck where in­di­cated on row 132. Con­tinue in patt from chart 2 un­til all chart rows are fin­ished. Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT Work as for left front to **. Next row: Work first row of patt chart 3, read­ing chart from right to left on odd num­bered rows, and from left to right on even num­bered rows. Cont in patt from chart 3, us­ing in­tar­sia tech­nique, cast­ing off 8 sts at front of neck where in­di­cated on row 133. Con­tinue in patt from chart 3 un­til all chart rows are fin­ished. Cast off.

SLEEVES (BOTH ALIKE) Us­ing 9mm cir­cu­lar nee­dle, yarn B and thumb method cast on 34 sts. Work 10 rows in rib as given for Back. Next row: Work first row of patt chart 4, read­ing chart from right to left on odd num­bered rows, and from left to right on even num­bered rows. Cont in patt from chart 4, us­ing in­tar­sia tech­nique, in­creas­ing 1 st at each end of row 17, and ev­ery foll 6th row un­til there are 46 sts. Cont in patt from chart 4 un­til all chart rows are fin­ished. Cast off. Join shoul­der seams.

COL­LAR With RS fac­ing, us­ing 9mm cir­cu­lar nee­dle and yarn B, pick up and knit 12 sts evenly along right side of front of neck, 17 sts evenly along back of neck, 12 sts evenly along left side of front of neck (41 sts). Work in rib as given for left front un­til col­lar mea­sures 20cm (8in), end­ing in a WS row. Cast off loosely in rib. Fold col­lar in half to in­side and neatly sew cast-off edge in place over pick-up row on in­side.

MAK­ING UP 1 Mark 25.5cm (10in) down from shoul­der seams to de­note arm­holes. 2 Fold sleeves in half length­ways. Place sleeve top folds to shoul­der seams, sew in po­si­tion be­tween mark­ers. 3 Join side and sleeve seams. 4 Pin out coat to mea­sure­ments given. 5 Cover with clean, damp tea tow­els and leave un­til dry.
