1 Voted the great­est ever Lan­cas­trian in our poll last year, this Manch­ester­born suf­fragette founded the Women’s So­cial and Po­lit­i­cal Union. 2 In 1905 this Old­ham wo­man be­came the first suf­fragette to be jailed for her ac­tions and a let­ter she wrote on her re­lease from Strange­ways is now on dis­play in Gallery Old­ham. 3 A cam­paign was launched this year for a statue of this Pre­ston­born wo­man to be erected in the city. She was im­pris­oned af­ter burn­ing down Sir Wil­liam Lever’s bun­ga­low at Riv­ing­ton and blowing up the Ex­change Build­ings in Liver­pool.
