ALL AT SEA
Surprises were in store at Cockermouth auctioneers Mitchells, particularly among the paintings, with a watercolour by Staithes Group artist Frank Henry Mason (1875-1965) of a shipwreck off Whitby (illustrated) selling for £4,200 against an estimate of £400-£600. In the same sale, his oil on canvas of the light schooner ‘Grecian’ being taken in tow after being captured also did well, selling for £2,600 against an estimate of £500-£800. Mason was born in Seaton Carew, Hartlepool and is well known for his maritime, shipping, coastal and harbour paintings as well as being the creator of Art Deco travel and railway posters.
The Staithes Group was an artists’ colony named after the North Yorkshire fishing village.
