Surprises were in store at Cock­er­mouth auc­tion­eers Mitchells, par­tic­u­larly among the paint­ings, with a wa­ter­colour by Staithes Group artist Frank Henry Ma­son (1875-1965) of a ship­wreck off Whitby (il­lus­trated) sell­ing for £4,200 against an es­ti­mate of £400-£600. In the same sale, his oil on canvas of the light schooner ‘Gre­cian’ be­ing taken in tow af­ter be­ing cap­tured also did well, sell­ing for £2,600 against an es­ti­mate of £500-£800. Ma­son was born in Seaton Carew, Hartle­pool and is well known for his mar­itime, ship­ping, coastal and har­bour paint­ings as well as be­ing the cre­ator of Art Deco travel and rail­way posters.

The Staithes Group was an artists’ colony named af­ter the North York­shire fish­ing vil­lage.
