DON’T KNOCK IT

Lancashire Life - - ANTIQUES -

Japanese cloisonné is exceedingly fragile. The slightest knock can dislodge the minute pieces of coloured vitreous enamels held inside the equally small, metal wire compartments, or ‘cloissons’, that form the decorative design of a piece. Restoration is nigh on impossible unless tackled by highly skilled specialists. Clearly the buyer of this impressive 20th century vase, which had damage to the neck area, was unperturbed. Decorated with the highly significant exotic birds of paradise, symbolising freedom and joy, and chrysanthemums, longevity and rejuvenation, among scrolling foliage on a black ground, the nine-inch tall vase sold for £22,000 at Gerrards rooms in Lytham St Annes. The bidder on the telephone is the largest collector of cloisonné in the UK, according to the auctioneers, who estimated to reflect its damage at £200-300.
