Martin Mere opened its doors to members 45 years ago and since then they have welcomed 5.5million visitors and more than 300,000 school visits. It came about thanks to the friendship of Sir Peter Scott with local haulier Ronnie Barker, who set up the purchase of 363 acres for £52,000 in 1972.

The land was derelict and there wasn’t a tree to be seen. It took just three years to turn it into a site of international importance.

* To witness any of the waterfowl at dawn or dusk, Martin Mere advertises specific dates of early and late openings throughout the year. Find out more at www.wwt.org.uk/wetlandcentres/martin-mere.
