A family affair
Chris’s passion for fish, and for hard work, has inspired his daughter Joycelyn Neve, managing director of The Seafood Pub Company with 11 gastropubs across Lancashire and now Yorkshire. ‘I grew up around the food business and catering, I remember going to dinner at a schoolfriend’s and wondering what was going on as nobody was at the sink cleaning mussels or fish,’ she recalls. ‘Going out on deliveries with dad was exciting, into the kitchens and seeing what was going on. I was always involved in the prepping – cleaning mussels, shucking oysters and scallops. In my first job if we had chefs not working quickly enough for service I’d move them out of the way and take over.
‘The thing about fish is you can really tell by sight how good it will be, whereas with meat something that looks great may cook up tough or lack flavour – that doesn’t happen with good fresh fish.’
