Sporting sales at Cockermouth auctioneers Mitchells invariably feature a range of fine 12-bores but that on April 13 promises the best ever, with makers such as Purdey, Westley Richards, W. W. Greener, Beretta and John Dickson and Son of Edinburgh all represented. The Dickson gun (pictured), a round action ejector with 27-inch barrels, dates from 1894 and is in superb condition and still in its original case. It is expected to sell for £7,000 to £8,000. Founded in 1820 and still in business, Dickson, ‘the Round Action gunmaker’, patented the uniquely Scottish trigger plate mechanism in 1880, and it remains renowned for its strength, elegance and balance.
