Unicorn Grocery, Chorlton

Lancashire Life - - Food & Drink Awards 2019 -

This worker’s co-operative has come a long way since it launched with a working group of two more than 20 years ago. This popular grocery has won a number of accolades for its work, including Best Food Retailer at the BBC Food & Farming Awards. There’s a focus on organic produce and affordable, wholesome food, buying direct from growers and the farm gate. As a principled business, Unicorn proves that an ethical and sustainable approach doesn’t mean any compromise on quality, variety or value for money.

‘It is amazing to be recognised for the work we do,’ said member director Stuart Jones. ‘We’re a 70strong worker co-operative and to know that what we do as a group is valued by other people really does mean a lot.

‘We work with so many wonderful growers, suppliers and producers, which is such an important part of what we do, and it’s a great feeling to get an award that really celebrates that.’
