All hail the D3

Has the Discovery 3 become the most comfortable, capable and affordable expedition truck?

- Editor Patrick Cruywagen

How cool is Ivan Cooper’s D3 on the cover? Does it make you want to go out and get yourself one? Or if you already own one, do you want to beef it up and take it on an epic trip? Well that is exactly what this former British Royal Marines Corps Colonel is doing, along with his young family. Read all about it on page 46.

As a history graduate and Land Rover fan, I really enjoyed doing the Tracing the Past feature on page 56. It’s something I have wanted to do for a while, drive from Red Wharf Bay, where the story of the green oval really began, to the Land Rover factory at Solihull, while taking in as much history as possible. It’s a trip that every Land Rover enthusiast has to do at least once. It’s good for the soul.

Solihull was not the only factory we visited this month. Our Technical Editor headed to Halewood to get a behind-thescenes look at production there. Find out what he uncovered on page 100.

A good friend of mine, Guts Swanepoel, has a working Defender 90 that has done 1,000,000 kilometres on the harsh African continent. He is a world-class wildlife photographer and photography teacher. His Defender still looks pretty good despite its hard life. I never thought I would see another million-kilometre Landy in my life. Well now I have. Turn to page 66 to find out about the Discovery 2 Down Under that has also been round the clock. It too is in absolutely brilliant condition. If your Land Rover is also part of the high-mileage club, please do get in touch.

Land Rovers are incredible things, they let ordinary people do extraordinary things. What are you waiting for? Jump into your Land Rover and pile on the miles. It will put a smile on your dial.
