Make memories

Why own a Land Rover if you’re not using it to make memories?

- Patrick Cruywagen Editor

WE’VE SO enjoyed compiling this issue for you. It’s packed with a little something for everyone. I’ve known Land Rover mechanic (and our cover star) Pete Long for years now. He is the kind of guy you can phone at 10.00 pm with a Land Rover problem and 30 minutes later he will rock up at your place with his toolbox to help. Provided he answers the initial call, of course...

His 110 is an impressive labour of love that took him a few years to get it exactly the way he wanted it. While the those at Twisted might declare it needs a paint job, bigger engine and some Recaro bucket seats, we absolutely love it. It’s a working man’s truck and Pete has not broken the bank to build his dream Defender. It is the kind of Defender that our readers drive.

For those looking for travel inspiration why give greenlaning in Calais a go? I took my five-year-old son along and we created Landy memories for life. See my report on page 70. Thinking of doing something a little more extreme or adventurous? Turn to page 88 to read about

Kingsley Holgate’s colourful drive from Cape Town to Kathmandu. Well, yes they had to ship the cars from Tanzania to Turkey, but still drove over 10,000 miles through 19 countries and did important humanitarian and conservation work along the way. Who said you can’t take the new Discovery on an expedition?

The story I had the most fun doing was the interview with Ollie Ollerton from the TV series SAS: Who Dares Wins. Ollie’s book Break Point has just hit the shelves and it’s an inspiring read, one that will help you unlock your potential. It’s not an ex-soldier tells-it-all book but rather a self-help book. I would highly recommend it. Best of Ollie drives a Series III 109, ex-military of course, which he was happy to show us. Read my frank interview with Ollie on page 50.

Well Land Rover fans, summer is knocking at the door, my Defender is running again and it’s time to hit the trails and make some Land Rover memories. First up some greenlanes in Wales followed by the Adventure Overland show. See you out there.
