All ages welcome
Red Rose Land Rover Club’s Tyro trials enable kids as young as 13 to have a go
Our club of the month is Red Rose Land Rover Club and its trials welcome kids as young as 13
FOR MANY years the Red Rose Land Rover Club has run tyro trials. ‘Tyro’, for those who don’t know, is Latin for novice, beginner or learner. Our events are designed to encourage new, young and lessexperienced drivers to come along to club events and compete in their Land Rovers, their parents’ or even a friend’s. Alongside the Tyro and on the same day the club also runs either an RTV (Road Taxed Vehicle) or a CCV (Cross Country Vehicle)
trial, so that the new drivers can get a glimpse of the slightly more challenging trials that are available within the club. For the most recent event the club ran a CCV trial alongside the Tyro trial.
This event, which was the last Tyro trial of the season, drew a good entry of 11 competitors, including three junior drivers from 13 to 17 years old, and the CCV trial had five competitors. With it being the last Tyro of the season all the competitors were trying their best to get the least points possible, which went towards the annual overall Tyro Championship result.
Red Rose has a lot of loyal and very active families involved in the club and especially with the Tyro trials. One family, with three youngsters aged 13 to 19 compete against each other in their father’s vehicle. Perhaps more surprisingly, two of the siblings are females.
The Land Rover vehicles competing on the day varied from the young to the old, with 1990s Defenders through to Discovery 4s. It’s surprising how well the newer vehicles perform with their Terrain Response technology compared to the old-school diff lock mechanisms. Other vehicles that competed included Discovery 1, 2 and 3s and a Freelander 2 – sadly no older Series Land Rovers on this occasion.
Throughout the day the competitors each completed ten trials sections and by afternoon, as the rain was closing in on the event, everyone quickly dashed down to prizegiving. The overall winner of the day was Anthony Cornwell, one of the junior drivers who had beaten his sister by five points; however she had finished the Tyro in second place.
There were smiles on the faces of all who attended and everyone at Red Rose Land Rover Club is looking forward to another full season of trailing next year. After all, the Tyro trial is the important first step for many young competitors into the world of Land Rover trialling and more.
