FOR THE last few months I have been running the Michelin Tyre Pressure Management System on my Defender. It’s a simple yet accurate way to constantly monitor your tyre pressures. First up you make sure all your tyres are at the pressure you would like them to be. For me this was 2 bar or 30 psi.

There is a sensor for each wheel that is easily screwed on and you are just about ready to go. They did provide a sensor lock nut to prevent against theft or the sensor coming off, but I did not use it. That is like stealing a TV remote control but not the actual TV.

The receiver has adhesive backing paper so you can just stick it to the windscreen and then you are definitely ready to go. It literally only takes a minute to install. No wires or drilling required.

Push the power button for three seconds and the receiver is now on. Drive for a few metres and the system comes alive, displaying the pressures of the four tyres on the LCD. The little solar panel on the back of the receiver will make sure the receiver charges via the rays of the sun though if you plan on driving through Norway in the winter you can get a charger cable for it that runs off your cigarette lighter.

The system has warning alarms that will trigger when low or high pressures are reached. A great warning system against a slow puncture or significant loss in tyre pressure. Obviously if you take the sensors off to change your pressure for sand or rocks then the LCD will display your new pressure and if it does drop significantly below this then the alarm will be activated.

Running the wrong pressures means you use more fuel and your tyres take more of a pounding than necessary. This management system will prevent that and save you money in the long run. Definitely a practical and handy addition to any Land Rover. Your tyres are the only part of your Land Rover making contact with the surface you are driving on so why not make sure they are performing at their optimum?
