DASH Cams are not what they used to be. Gone are the days where they are only used by Russians hoping to capture some horrific car accident which you then watch on Youtube when you can’t sleep or if you are waiting for the AA man in his yellow van.

The Mivue J60 easily has more technology than my 1998 Defender 110. In fact, some of the technology in it is the same as the technology that JLR are putting into their latest vehicle offerings. More about that in a second.

I mounted the J60 behind my rear view mirror so that it does not negatively impact my views while driving. Easy enough to do by sticking the mounting plate onto the windscreen. The actual camera just unclips so you can hide it away if stopping in Romford for more than five seconds. I have extra power points and just plugged the power cable into one of those. The J60 is capable of capturing full HD 1080 pixels footage at a crazy 30 frames per second. So no chance of missing anything. The J60 has 150 degree wide angle viewing and an aperture of F1.8.

For me a dash cam is all about capturing cool footage of my Landy adventures. The J60 does more than that. I downloaded the Mivue app onto my phone and connected my phone to the camera via Wifi. So if I am driving through the lake at the Billing offroad course I can livestream the dash cam footage onto Facebook and make my mates jealous.

One of the advantages of the app is that it’s easy to move footage onto your phone or laptop or else share it with someone else. Not long after installing the cam I was able to update all the J60’s firmware thanks to an alert that came up on my phone.

That was not the only thing that updated. All the latest Live stream on Facebook speed camera info was also updated. So the J60 tells you when you are going too fast, when you are coming to a speed camera or if you are drifting across lanes. All of those systems worked really well especially when I was driving in a place that was unfamiliar to me.

However, I was not convinced by the Advanced Driver Assistance System as sometimes it would say I was driving too close to the vehicle in front of me when there was no vehicle in front of me. That system probably needs a bit of refinement.

The thing I like the most about the J60 is that it has an in-built GPS tracker so I will always be able to know where I was and how fast I was going. Plus I will always have HD wide angle footage of every move my Defender makes. I will be able to look back at footage of a trip and link this to exactly where I was.

I never thought that I would be a dash cam kind of guy but now I cannot imagine myself without one. Especially in an old Defender like mine. So I have managed to obtain all this new technology and extra info without having to buy a new Land Rover!

One last and important thing. If your camera senses a sudden change in movement (thanks to its built-in 3-axis G sensor) due to an accident, it automatically stores the footage. The only thing it cannot do is diagnose faults on your Land Rover.
