Mounting the compressor
THERE are a number of criteria that need to be considered when choosing a location for the compressor. Firstly, access to the unit needs to be good. I wanted the flexibility of having access to an air line from either side of the Land Rover and from the rear, which dictated a central location inside the cabin, rather than in the engine bay.
The compressor must not be too close to sources of heat such as the exhaust system, nor directly behind the radiator. It should be kept away from excessive moisture, and be safe from mechanical damage or abrasion. A free air flow is also important, as is access to the system’s air filter. Also bear in mind that the compressor is fairly noisy and becomes hot under normal operation. Other considerations are the proximity to the axles (if using air locking differentials) and to the battery compartment. Where possible, avoid long runs for air lines and battery supply cables.
The ARB air compressor is very compact, given its high output. And it’s versatile in the way it can be adjusted and configured for tight locations on the vehicle. I was able to set it up to fit very neatly in the space between my cubby box and the lowered middle bulkhead. Before working on the vehicle, disconnect the battery.
It’s all included
The compressor kit is comprehensive 2 and includes everything required to install it into a 12 volt vehicle with relative ease, plus full instructions for every step.
So bendy
Compared to the previous picture,
4 here the unit has been rotated back to a flat position relative to the mounting feet, allowing attachment in tight locations.
Getting the fittings located
The reservoir tank (on top) can be
5 rotated by loosening the manifold bolt, so the air outlet ports are facing a convenient direction for attaching fittings.
The full set
The ARB Compressor kit is
1 complemented by two separate products: a Pump Up kit for tyres and other inflatable items, and a tyre inflator with an accurate gauge.
Lots of options
The compressor itself is very
3 versatile, in that it can be adjusted for numerous mounting configurations by loosening these adjusting screws to rotate the body.
Choosing a location
I’ll fit the compressor on front of rear 6 bulkhead (behind cubby box). It’s protected from the load area, and allows airline access through all three doors.
