TRY LAKE DISTRICT LANING

-

make sure you take along the right kit so that you are not any of those three things.

One of the best wild camping experiences I ever had was at a place called Kinloch Hourn, which is found at the end of one of the longest dead end lanes in Scotland. There we camped on the rocky shore of one of Scotland’s finest sea lochs. Yes, it rained but the beauty took away the cold and wet. Finally, don’t forget to leave the place like you found it so the next person can also enjoy it like you did.

THE Lake District is one of the most popular parts of the United Kingdom, especially during the holiday season, when the place resembles the Oxford Circus Tube station during the peak of Christmas shopping spree. The best way to escape the crowds is by foot, pedal bike or Land Rover, from where you can enjoy the spectacular landscapes and lakes, on your own. This special part of the UK is great for a day or weekend of spectacular greenlaning. These are our three favourites. Parkamoor is top of the pile as it’s one of the most technical and fun lanes. It starts innocently with a gentle rocky climb with great views over Coniston. The rocks then get bigger and more challenging as you pass through several stepped rock gardens. Good wheel placement is a must.

LAKE DISTRICT LANING

Enjoy the viewpoint because you sure do deserve it.

Breast High is best driven from west to east. After a long, easy decline there is a small ford crossing followed by the mother of all long climbs. You will struggle for traction in parts so keep the momentum going as you bounce over the melon-sized rocks. If you need to stop and pack rocks to make progress easier, do it. Once again don’t forget to enjoy the views while bouncing about. Our third option is Stile End, also known as the Sound of Music lane as it will put you in a happy mood due to stunning scenery. It starts just to north of the Windermere, the toughest bits are the tight S bends, which might require a bit of a reverse if in a long wheelbase Land Rover. They might not be greenlanes but don’t forget to incorporate the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes into your Lakes adventures as they are two iconic pieces of British road.
