Land Rover Monthly

Bring on the muscle

- Patrick Cruywagen, @busheditor

IF I got a penny for every time someone says the Land Rover magazines and features are all the same then I would be wealthier than Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the richest man in the world. How many Land Rovers can he buy with his $190 billion fortune?

The biggest challenge we face at LRM is to provide you with fresh and compelling content in a highly-competitive and everchanging market. To that end, last month we started our new LRM Classics section with Gary Pusey at the helm. Thanks for all the positive feedback regarding this new addition.

This month we decided to have a little fun and I am proud to present to you our first-ever Muscle Car issue. I know that by definition a Muscle Car is American and V8-powered, but don’t you sometimes ask yourself what would the Land Rover version of a muscle car look like? And remember Land Rovers were meant to go off-road and not pop wheelies or do burnouts in Mayfair.

Land Rover claim that the new Defender is the most capable Land Rover ever made and it probably is. You won’t see a standard new Defender on the start line of the tough Dakar Rally while the Bowler Wildcat 200, in our Muscle Car feature, has competed in it three times. So turn to page 36 and see our eight favourite Land Rover muscle cars, we think we may have found something to suit just about everyone’s taste. Before I sign off please allow me to share with you my favourite new Defender story. The said owner literally drove it off the showroom floor to the location in Scotland where they filmed the extreme driving scenes with the new Defender for the James Bond movie No Time to Die. The next social media picture he posted was of his tyre off the rim with some recovery tracks in the background, while having a rant at the dealer for not putting the correct tyres on. I commented that if you want to drive like James Bond you shouldn’t dress like Mr Bean. I know that when they film the Bond movies they have several examples of the same Land Rover as they do get smashed up and damaged. The name is Bean. Mister Bean.
