Removing the engine and gearboxes

-

I usually lift out the engine and gearboxes as one assembly, using three lifting points. If the clutch is to be changed, or perhaps the flywheel needs to come off to replace the rear main oil seal, the engine and gearboxes can be separated later on the workshop floor. During a factory visit just before Defender production ceased, I noticed the new engines and gearboxes were transported overhead and lowered into their chassis. These assemblies were suspended from just three lifting points: two engine lifting eyes, and a point on the gearboxes that was unknown to me. I practically went out of bounds on the factory tour to find where this lifting point was. Previously, when lifting the engine/transmission, sometimes it would rise up level, sometimes at a skewed angle. But now, using this third lifting point, I can lift the engine and gearboxes out of the rolling chassis safely and level every time.
