Pakistan Land Rovers
I was interested to read, in the March 2021 issue, about the Pakistan Land Rover Club and your comments about when Land Rovers were imported into Pakistan.
This is a photo I took back in 1980 of two early Series Is that were parked up at the back of the Lahore Hilton Hotel, chassis numbers R862430 and 42.
I believe they had been used on some government project, possibly to do with irrigation schemes. I always remember these as the great missed opportunity as they were basically complete original vehicles, but trying to find the owner and return them to the UK was not an option as I was having enough problems getting material into the country for the project I was involved with at that time. I often wonder what their eventual fate was as they were still there in late 1981 but must have gone shortly afterwards as I believe the site was redeveloped.
Keep up the good work with the mag, I’m still enjoying the ongoing new Defender debate. I managed to get one on loan this week: it’s a superb family 4x4, if you’ve got that sort of money, but I can’t see the Pakistan Government buying any if they do any more irrigation schemes - nor anyone else who needs a real workhorse!
