Preparing the Discovery higher ratio transfer box
The LT230 transfer box was fitted to various models including Defender, Discovery 1 and 2 and some models of Range Rover Classic. The basic casing on these units is essentially the same, but there are a number of variations across the model ranges, such as the damper weight detailed in this section. Other variations are more difficult to overcome. For example, the Discovery 2 transfer box does not have a speedometer drive gear, but uses an electronic method of speed measurement. Most transfer boxes from a 300Tdi Discovery will have a mechanical speedo drive, but this one, being from a late automatic model with Electronic Diesel Control, has an electronic version. There are ways of interchanging LT230 gearboxes from different models, but the example shown here is one of the more straightforward conversions.
Please note that changes in speedometer drive gear with a transfer gearbox, as well as changes of wheel-tyre size, will mean that the Defender speedometer may not read accurately, and recalibration may be required. In this case the owner is going to deal with this matter after deciding on final choice for new wheels and tyres.
