I ALREADY own two Roorkhee chairs and a Harry Moon side table from the company Mellvill and Moon, the makers of the most gorgeous and opulent safari equipment in the world. They are the most expensive bits of camping gear that I have, Mellvill and Moon products are the kind you might see in a five star safari lodge. They are almost too nice to use when camping so they mostly decorate my home to impress visitors, just like that rare Land Rover you only take out on sunny and dry days.

So when the opportunity came up to review their walnut Odyssey bar, I jumped at it. When I pour myself a drink from the bar I imagine I am Robert Redford in Out of Africa, then reality hits home and I realise I am in an orchard in Buckinghamshire, thanks to the Covid lockdown.

The Mellvill and Moon Odyssey bar first saw the light of day a few decades ago when one was made for the modern-day explorer and humanitarian Kingsley Holgate, who just happens to be a Land Rover ambassador too. When you are travelling through many dry African countries, then there is a great need to be able to carry of few bottles of your favourite tipple in style. I have visited over 30 African countries with Kingsley on expeditions and I can confirm that the prototype Odyssey bar is still in operation; in fact I think it has seen more action than Andy Mcnab.

The beautiful walnut bar has partitions and can hold up to ten bottles – or instead of going down that route, you could instead include a few glasses. The brass fittings, soft closing of the top and door plus the leather-padded table, make this the classiest field bar by far. For practical purposes I would suggest acquiring the special canvas bag for the bar to prevent damage and ease of transportation.

The Odyssey bar is a piece of gear that won’t look out of place on the tailgate of a fine early Range Rover Classic at the Goodwood Members meet. Just like the Range Rover, it will impress or turn heads and it too comes at a cost of course.
