A READER criticised our 2018 portable BBQS article as it did not have any Cadac products in it. Cadac are a South African brand and institution. Every family used to have a Cadac skottel braai when I grew up. My dad and uncles would do us great big fry-ups for breakfast on it; this was normally followed by a swim in the pool.
Now I am going back to my roots with the low-pressure gas-powered Safari Chef 2, easily the most versatile BBQ in our line-up. I hate to admit it but the Safari Chef 2 is now my new favourite, the reason for this is that is it offers so much more than just a traditional BBQ. For starters it has four different cooking surfaces. You can boil a kettle on the pot stand, the lid can be used as a pot or wok, then it has a flat grill plate which is great for bacon and eggs and finally it has a separate BBQ grid of course. The BBQ grid has a special ceramic coating for healthier and cleaner cooking. Then there is a removeable fat pan which makes cleaning it a breeze. They have thought of everything. In its defence it does come from the land of the braai (South African slang for BBQ).
The legs conveniently fold in and everything fits into a small, black carry bag that does not take up much space at all.
This is without a doubt the best all-round portable BBQ on the planet. If you were only allowed to pack one cooking device then this should be it. I even checked to see if it fits into my hiking backpack – and it does.
