MARKET NEWS: Land Rovers with a price on their head?
Owners of diesel Land Rovers built between 2007 and 2019 could be in for a big compensation payday, according to lawyers
DO you own a diesel-powered Land Rover made between 2007 and 2019? If so, you could be in line for thousands of pounds in compensation, according to top lawyers. It’s all down to so-called “cheat” or “defeat” engine-management software that falsifies emissions data.
Remember the infamous “Diesel-gate” scandal of 2015-16, which resulted in VW paying out $15.3 billion to US motorists who had bought VWS with rigged emissions systems? Lawyers believe that was only the tip of the iceberg and that many more manufacturers were implicated – including Jaguar Land Rover.
JLR has issued an emphatic denial of allegations it used emissions cheat devices in its vehicles and said it will “strongly contest” any legal claims to the contrary.
Despite this, about a dozen UK law firms are now planning no-win-no-fee actions against 18 major car makers and have been inundating motorists with texts and emails urging them to sign up.
Law firm Leigh Day, from London, have announced they are ”investigating a potential group claim against JLR over an alleged ‘cheat device’ fitted on some of their cars in order to artificially reduce emissions to pass EU tests” between 2007 and 2019.
Models in the lawyers’ sights include Discovery Sport, Discovery and Evoque, although other diesel models may also be affected. According to the lawyers, monitoring showed that when these vehicles were driven on the road, they emitted many times more levels of toxic NOX gases than under test conditions.
Leigh Day partner, Oliver Holland, is leading the group claim against JLR. He says: “Evidence in the public domain clearly shows that diesel engines in some Jaguar Land Rover models were fitted with emissions cheat devices so that customers have not been driving around in the low-emissions vehicles they thought they were.
“Instead, these owners have been cheated, and Britain’s roads and surrounding areas have been polluted with NOX emissions way beyond the levels that motor manufacturers have stated, to maintain profit and avoid regulation essential to our health and the health of the planet.”
Talking of profits, the law firms say up to ten million UK drivers could be in line for an average £12,000 compensation. And with lawyers pocketing at least 30 per cent of every no-win-no-fee, that’s big payday for the lawyers.
Law firms say it doesn’t matter whether you bought or leased your Land Rover – new or secondhand. According to The Times newspaper, about 400,000 owners of various diesel cars have already signed up for these group claims. Many more are likely to follow.
What does this mean for would-be owners of the affected models? In the short-term it ought to result in falling values, but there’s evidence that some folk are deliberately buying affected models in the hope of claiming compensation. But that’s a gamble – especially when JLR have pledged to fight any legal challenges, tooth and nail.
If prices do come down as a result, there could be some real bargains out there. The Discovery Sport, in particular, is an economical and well-equipped all-rounder with awesome off-road performance that I’d have no hesitation in recommending.

DEFENDER 130 SIX WHEELER
Defender 130 6 x 4 chassis cab . This Land
Rover Defender was first registered in 1986, but due to modifications it has been out on a Q plate. This is a 130" with an additional axle bolted onto the back, this was done so that a crane could be mounted onto the rear, please note it is 4 wheel drive only. It has a blue printed and cross-bolted 4.6 RV8 engine. The block is from a TVR Tuscan race engine, it was purchased as a brand new short engine. Heads and cams are from a 3.9 Range Rover, the block has done less than 10k but not sure about head or cams. It has a Weber/ Edlebrock 500 carb brought new in 2016 and has done less than 5k. Complete with a R380 gearbox which has done less than 10k since rebuild. Full stainless exhaust including twin tubular header pipes. This vehicle has been owned by the current company since 2008 and as such has plenty of service history with it. The vehicle was used daily to complete work utilising the crane on the rear but we took this vehicle off the road in 2018 when we purchased newer Defenders, the crane was removed and was put into storage where it has been sat since. Unfortunately, the barn it had been stored in was complete with mice which have chewed through some cables and interior. The interior is very basic and the whole vehicle needs a bit of TLC to get it back on the road, the dampers will need replacing and the fuel pump will also need the same. The vehicle has not been started up for around 2 years and was running before the mice got at the cables and have not tried to start it since. This is a very unique vehicle and as such is very difficult for me to put a price on it so we are putting out there to "sensible offers" and offers will be + vat through the business. Galvanised bulkhead, which was then T-washed and left to cure before paint, and fitted in December 2020, along with a new brake servo/ new fixings to mount bulkhead with, new door hinges/genuine Land Rover front door seals. I had both front door bottoms repaired and painted whilst it was having the bulkhead work carried out. Seatbox has had new panels fitted as we noticed the sides were getting corroded. New rear body fittings were also fitted at time along with new clutch hose. January 2021 I had Ashcroft 3.5 HD pegged diffs with Ashcroft lockers fitted along with HD shafts and drive flanges to the front and rear. New Gwyn Lewis front and rear propshafts fitted along with a LOF extreme single mass clutch a flywheel kit. During this time I have had the Old Man EMU Challenge kit along with all galvanised mounts fitted. Genuine Land Rover fuel pump just fitted and complete genuine fuel filter and housing assembly. I have multiple security added, which I will go through on purchase and will be included. Pre cat defender running straight through with side exit. New injector harness/rocker cover gasket and the seals for the bolts genuine Land Rover done last year. All oils have just been done and relative filters. Extreme 4x4 bumperettes on rear just fitted. 11 Months MOT. This Defender has no expense spared. There are things I have likely missed, I have receipts of over 24K that will be included and to back up work undertaken. Due to lockdown It has not been off-road. There are scratches here and there as to be expected. It may not be the

DEFENDER 130 UTILITY
Land Rover Defender, owned by our company from new, 158,532 miles and has been maintained regardless of cost and comes with a full service history. The interior is clean, it has had seat covers on since new so are almost as good as new, there is a hole in the driver's side floor covering where heels rest because no mats were used. From day 1, the vehicle has been fitted with a company tracker, company policy is not to drive our Land Rovers over 60mph so rarely goes over this, it has probably only ever been driven over 70mph a handful of times in its life, most of the miles are motorway miles due to working all over the country. The tracker also picks up harsh driving and as a result the vehicle has been driven respectfully throughout its life. The body work has a dent in the N/S wing, a small dent to the right of the driver's door and one on the rear tailgate, there are a few other little knocks and some paint work is lightly scratched picked up from overgrowth , hedges etc, the bonnet has some top coat paint missing where the sign writing has been removed. the canvass back rear opening is a little ripped and the zips don't close it properly. Overland camper left-hand drive 1999 Defender 1999 110 Td5 Owned by me since 2013 and imported and registered in the UK in 2020. Two previous owners, 145,250 miles, Three A4 folders full of receipts making a comprehensive service history and in great condition.
