Marbles have been used as toys for thousands of years. The playing season traditionally began on Ash Wednesday. In Sussex, it ended on Good Friday, and to play after that date was considered unlucky. Since 1932 the British and World Marbles Championships have taken place on Good Friday at The Greyhound pub in Tinsley Green, West Sussex. Competitive marbles games have been played in the area since at least the 16th century.
