Steaming in snow

-

Steam engines once dominated the British railways. Today, most run only on heritage lines, such as the volunteer-run Severn Valley Railway. These magnificent giants come into their own at Christmas, steaming through the snowy countryside. The Severn Valley line was first opened in 1862, closing to passengers 101 years later. In the 1960s, 50 volunteers set up the Severn Valley Railway Society. Their aim was to buy a stretch of track from British Rail. Today, the line takes its passengers back in time with every journey, in particular its Santa Specials, enjoyed by young and old alike.
