A whistle-stop tour of the origins of our midwinter carols and instruments. It starts in the Middle Ages and ends in the 20th century. Classic carols and ancient songs are performed on forgotten instruments such as the shawm and cittern, plus the more familiar guitar, flute, oboe and accordion.
