Carved with love
The lovespoon is a gift of romantic intent, dating back to the 17th century. Carved from wood, it was traditionally presented to a young woman by her suitor. The idea was it showed the man was capable of providing for a family and that he was skilled at woodwork. Certain symbols came to have a particular meaning, including a lock for security, a cross for faith and a bell for marriage. Originating from the cawl or soup spoon, today they are often given as gifts on St Valentine’s Day, and are used for decorative rather than practical purposes.
