Hidden HAven

An old ceramic teapot can be recycled to create an insect home in the garden. Pet bedding is used in place of the soft feathers, downy seedheads or wool that insects such as bumblebees use to line their nests. The spout acts as a built-in entrance tunnel to a roomy chamber, providing a weatherproof home. To attract bumblebees in particular, the spout needs to be at least ¾in (2cm) wide, to accommodate the queen. Planting spring bulbs around the teapot keeps it hidden from predators and provides an early food source for pollinators.

An underground nest is recreated in a buried teapot, providing a safe and cosy place for bumblebees or other insects
