Into the blue

-

Artist Sarah Middleton has found the perfect way to combine her lifelong love of both blue and the natural world. She uses an old photographic process, cyanotype, invented in 1841, to make attractive candle holders. The process involves applying a light-sensitive solution to watercolour paper. Objects or negatives are layered on to the paper, then exposed to sunlight. The solution is then rinsed off and the paper dried, fixing the image in glorious blue tones. To make the candle holder, the paper is then applied to glass, its thinness allowing the light to shine through. Each holder is unique and made to order. They measure 9cm in height with an 8cm diameter.
