Celebrating excellence
On 28 April, the town of Camborne in Cornwall celebrates the mining heritage of the area and the life and work of inventor Richard Trevithick, a pioneer of steam-powered transport. Roads are closed for the day, vintage vehicles and engines are displayed and street performances given by local singing and theatre groups. The day begins with the bal maidens’ and miners’ dance, performed by local children in traditional 19th century dress. Trevithick’s Dance takes place later in the afternoon and is followed by the steam parade. Though he performed poorly at school, Trevithick was dedicated to engineering and this relentless pursuit of his aims is an important aspect of the annual festival.
