A DELICATE CRAFT
Crochet is an Old French word, meaning small hook. Crocheting is the process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn using a metal, wooden or plastic hook. The first written reference to the craft was in an early 19th century journal. It was called shepherd’s knitting and was a cheaper substitute for traditional lace. Its popularity rose after Queen Victoria bought crocheted lace from Irish women struggling to make a living during the potato famine.
