Uses for Wood
Norsey’s coppiced wood supplies commercial timber merchants and is used much as it ever was. Traditional uses for the different woods grown here include: Hornbeam: A very hard wood used for tool handles, clogs and charcoal, it also makes excellent firewood. Ash: Strong and resilient, ash wears smooth, making it perfect for poles, tools and axe handles. Alder: Alder is traditionally used for clogs, broom heads, and in the tanning process. Oak: Oak was coveted wherever durable wood was needed. Ladder rungs, carts and fencing were made from coppiced oak, but those allowed to grow as standards were prized most of all, in houses and shipbuilding. Sweet chestnut: Straight-grained and durable sweet chestnut is also fast growing. It is traditionally used for fencing because it lasts up to 20 years in the ground. Its nuts are also a rich food source.
