A SOFT SPOT

-

A kneeler cushions the joints during garden chores and is simple to make. Two rectangles of oilcloth measuring 16in by 21in (40 x 54cm) and two pieces of 12in (31cm) long twill tape are needed. Both tape strips are folded to form handles. A handle is pinned to each short edge of one rectangle, on the right side, with the handles folded inwards. The second rectangle is placed on top, right sides facing, sandwiching the handles between them. The rectangles are held together with paperclips around the edges, as pins will leave holes. To sew oilcloth with a machine, masking tape is used to cover the underside of the presser foot. Leaving a 1cm allowance a seam is stitched around the edges, which will also secure the handles in place, leaving an opening of 6in (15cm) between the start and finish points. The kneeler is then turned right side out through the opening and stuffed with toy filling until it is firm and plump. The seam allowance is folded in and stitched to close.
