Blundering visitor
With a surprising thud, an evening-flying bug knocks into a lit window. This clumsy flier is the May bug, also known as the doodlebug, cockchafer or Billywitch. It is easily recognisable due to its fan-like antennae and wing case the colour of varnished wood. Adults emerge from late April, and on May nights can be heard whirring noisily around the garden, where they are an important source of prey for bats.
