A TRIBUTE TO LORD NELSON

-

Punctuating the horizon to the south-west of the castle, another hilltop is crowned by a very different landmark. This is the neo-Gothic folly, Paxton’s Tower. This was built by William Paxton, a merchant and banker who lived in nearby Middleton Hall, which burned down in 1931. The 36ft (11m) high tower was put up between 1806-1809 in honour of Lord Nelson. It is believed Paxton may have met Nelson while he was Mayor of Carmarthen. While lacking the gravitas of Dinefwr Castle, the panoramic views from the tower, framed enticingly by its archways, are glorious. The lower part of the tower is triangular, with a turret at each corner. On the first floor is a banqueting room, which can be accessed via a staircase in one of the turrets. The prospect room on the floor above is no longer accessible, and the windows, which would have revealed views of the countryside, are bricked up.
