A hidden feast
When first unwrapped, this farmhouse loaf appears to be a simple accompaniment to a picnic. But once cut, its layers of generous fillings are revealed. This wholesome and satisfying treat is simple to make. The inside of a crusty loaf is hollowed out, leaving approximately an inch of bread all around. The breadcrumbs can be kept for use in another recipe. Any variety of meats, cheeses and salad are layered inside, one by one. Starting with lettuce leaves helps to stop the bread from becoming soggy. It is then tied with kitchen twine and wrapped in paper, ready to be enjoyed in the sun.
