Hives woven in history
Made from a frame of wicker, Anglo-Saxon hives were then coated with a mixture of clay, horsehair and straw, called daub, making a warm shelter for the bees inside. Tina Cunningham creates accurate replicas at her workshop in Carmarthenshire, weaving and coating each one by hand using wood and clay gathered from her woodland. Though they can be used ornamentally, the hives can also provide a home for bees in the garden.
