Where to see puffins

The Atlantic puffin, Fratercula arctica, is native to the north Atlantic Ocean. There are thought to be between 6 and 12 million puffins throughout their range, of which 580,000 pairs nest in the United Kingdom. Internatio­nally, puffins are classified as vulnerable by the Internatio­nal Union for the Conservati­on of Nature. A few puffin colonies can be found on mainland Britain, but most nest on offshore islands that are free of rats. Large colonies occur at:
