ABLAZE WITH COLOUR

The intense orange blooms of the Mexican sunflower are ideal for enlivening the late-summer border

-

FOR DAZZLING COLOUR in the garden during late summer, the Mexican sunflower, Tithonia rotundifolia ‘Fiesta del Sol’ is a difficult plant to beat, producing a profusion of rich, velvety orange flowers, with bright yellow centres. These large, vibrant blooms are held aloft on long, hollow stems extending from contrasting, dark green bushy foliage. Winner of an All America Selection (AAS) award, this is a rarely offered species, but one which is a firm favourite with BBC gardening expert Monty Don, who places it at the top of his ‘must-have’ list of orange plants. Its vivid shade is stunning and pairs beautifully with blue and purple perennials. Hayloft welcomes the Mexican sunflower, bolstered by further improvements, where it now offers earlier blooming periods, plus a more robust, stouter anti-flop frame. Those who encounter this fast-growing specimen are often left mesmerised by the abundance of Dahlia-like blooms, providing unrivalled colour from July until the first frosts of October. For this reason, the Mexican sunflower deserves a prime position on the patio where its velutinous textured, orange blossoms will glow whatever the weather. These plants will reach a height of 1.2m and a spread of 60cm. Supplied as young plants in June.*
