Helpful lift

Taking the hoe to the garden becomes a good daily task at the height of summer. It has two roles: the first is to clear out any weeds that may be taking root; the second is to aerate the soil and allow water to penetrate more deeply. In particularly hot, dry summers, this enables the plants to more readily extract nutrients from the soil.
