Extending the flowering season

-

Common honeysuckle is essentially a summer flower, blooming from June to September. However, planting other varieties can extend the period when perfume and decoration fill the garden. ‘Serotina’ is a late-flowering variety, which can still bloom in October, after first appearing in July. It is a multi-coloured honeysuckle, with hot-pink on the outside of the flowers and yellow and pink lips. There is also an early blooming variety of common honeysuckle, called ‘Belgica’. This form bears flowers that are red with white lips, ageing to a buttery yellow. It appears in May and June, bringing an early rush of scent in late spring. Growing different varieties of common honeysuckle together means their effect on the garden can be enjoyed for six months of the year.
