Dressing up a plain lampshade

A plain lampshade is given a makeover with pretty trimmings from the work basket

-

ALAMPSHADE TAKES ON a bright new look when covered with strips of colourful embroidered ribbon and edged with dainty pompoms. Overlapping each strip creates a pleated effect, adding texture and creating a neat and tidy look. Placed in a quiet corner, the finished item will bring a splash of fresh summer colour into the home.

HOW TO COVER THE LAMPSHADE

When choosing ribbon, wrapping the shade loosely with string can give guidance as to length needed. Approximately 15m is expected for a small lampshade but this can vary depending on the size of the chosen shade and the width of the ribbon. A dab of glue is applied to the inside rim of the lampshade with a brush and the end of the ribbon secured. It is wrapped around the frame vertically, overlapping the edge of each length. Using several shorter pieces helps prevent tangling. Each strip is glued down before the next is stuck neatly over the join, inside the shade. Finally, the trimming is cut to fit and glued bit by bit around the base. Fabric is treated with a flame retardant and the lampshade used with a 40 watt bulb, not less than 4in (10cm) from the shade.
